What you say when you follow up really depends on the situation, but here are a four guidelines to help you on your way.
- Ask for permission to follow up during the initial contact. That opens the door to staying in touch.
- Follow up sooner rather than later. You don’t want them to forget you, and you don’t want them to decide on a competitor before you get around to recontacting them.
- Do it for their benefit. Approach the follow up contact in a way that comes across as though you are doing it for their benefit and to make their life easier. Make them feel like you are serving them, not cajoling or pestering.
- Keep smiling. Even if it is your fifth attempt at returning their call you never want to sound impatient or frustrated.
